The mystery of Mabel: Can you help solve story behind King’s Cross pub’s name?

'We have CCTV footage of stock boxes falling over when no one has been down there for ages'

21 May, 2018 — By Ellen O’Riordan

HISTORIANS have been asked to help shed more light on the life of a woman who has a popular pub named after her in King’s Cross.

Mabel’s Tavern, in Mabledon Place, is set to get new signs as part of a makeover to the outside of the corner building, with a new picture of what the mystery Mabel may have looked like. But, in truth, nobody really knows the full story, apart from that she may have been called Mabel MacInelly and married into a family who owned an estate in the area. Instead, bar staff and regulars talk of how she haunts the premises.

Manager David Berry, whose pet Labrador coincidentally is called Mabel, said: “We have CCTV footage of stock boxes falling over when no one has been down there for ages.” People have also reported hearing the sound of a dumbwaiter going up and down, “even though it was ripped out years ago”.

The bar’s external new look will follow a refit of the inside of the pub, which includes new pumps and an extended range of beers installed. The Royal Wedding this Saturday will temporarily replace the football on its television screens before the World Cup begins next month.
