The people of Islington have spoken, and voted overwhelmingly for a Labour council
11 May, 2018
• THE people of Islington have spoken. Last Thursday, they voted overwhelmingly for a Labour council.
People voted for a council that will build more council housing and fight to do so, as in the landmark case against developer Parkhurst Road Ltd. The company wanted to develop the old Territorial Army site, in Parkhurst Road, Holloway, with very little affordable or social housing.
Islington Council opposed this planning application and received High Court support for this, which will set a precedent to help in our fight to deliver genuinely affordable homes for local people.
Importantly, this sends a clear message to any developer thinking of buying the Holloway Prison site that the council wants at least 50 per cent of any new housing to be homes that people can genuinely afford to live in.
On May 3 people voted for a manifesto that included support for our young people, helping them into training and employment, support for our older people and for protection of our public services.
I am proud to have been elected as a Labour councillor in St George’s ward and to be given the chance to help to implement Labour’s manifesto, to work hard for the people and to make Islington a fairer place for all.
