There is nothing odd in the UK making a payment to the EU when it leaves

06 July, 2018

• WHAT happens when you leave a club depends on the club rules and what commitments you made to the club before you left.

Hence, to take Dr H Maynard’s point, (Why must we pay to leave EU club? June 29), if you have given a commitment to support the club’s expenditure and agreed how much you are going to pay, you could be sued for breach of contract if you then left the club and refused to honour your commitment.

Relying on what your grandad did during the war cuts no ice. Accordingly, there is nothing odd in the UK making a payment to the EU when it leaves.

The necessity to do so had been predicted well before the EU referendum so it should have come as no surprise (but then we were all told we should pay no attention to people who knew what they were talking about, weren’t we?).
