Thieves’ roof raid

17 May, 2019

Milner Square

• A GANG of thieves have stripped lead off all the roofs in historic Milner Square, causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage. One arrest was made by police late in the evening of the recent Bank Holiday Monday.

The landlord/owner of the properties is Islington Council. They are managed by Partners, which is having to erect scaffolding to repair damage before rain expected over the weekend.

Leaseholders of the grade II-listed properties have been assured that the cost of repairs will be covered by building insurance.

The roofs were all expensively repaired in 2015. Their listing means that original materials, Welsh slate and lead, have to be used.

What on earth can be the mentality of someone doing this? Access to the roof can only take place through the communal space.
