Three men arrested on suspicion of murdering 16-year-old in Camden

Police urge anyone else with information to get in touch

16 August, 2019

THREE young men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering 16-year-old Alex Smith in the Regent’s Park Estate.

Alex, a former Islington resident who recently moved to Wembley, was stabbed several times on Monday night just after 11pm in Munster Square.

The Met Police said a post-mortem examination found the cause of Alex’s death to be a stab wound to the chest.

His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers. He is thought to be one of Camden’s youngest fatal stabbing victims.

Following a warrant at an address in Islington this morning (Friday) a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken to a north London police station where he remains in custody.

A 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday. They have been bailed to return on a date in mid-September.

The New Journal reported how popular Alex had been excluded from Acland Burghley School last year. Youth worker and activist Chris Preddie OBE said he needed more support and was “crying out for help for a long time”.

Detective Inspector Jamie Stevenson, from Specialist Crime, said: “We’re still keeping an open mind concerning the motive of this brutal attack and thank those who have come forward and spoken to us so far.

“We know there are individuals out there who can assist this investigation and we continue to appeal for those people to make contact with officers. Please do the right thing and come forward, anonymously if need be, but do make the call.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to call the incident room on 020 8358 0400 quoting Cad 8433/12Aug or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information.
