WITH just hours to spare, a councillor was one of the last people to get married in Islington before Tier 4 restrictions kicked in.
Tollington ward councillor Flora Williamson married her partner Toby North on Saturday at the Town Hall.
She said: “It was brilliant and magic. There was a bit of camaraderie around it because it was so low key.
“It was just about getting married and marrying the person I love, as opposed to this big circus around the wedding.
“Having said that, we are still planning on having a massive party at a later date!”
The couple were married at the exact moment that the government announced the new tier system rules.
Cllr Williamson said: “We were wrapped up in our own bubble. We got a few messages from friends with congratulations, saying it was a joy on a depressing day. We knew about a new tier system but we didn’t know what it actually meant and found out the next day.
“I am so glad we managed to do it.”
Under Tier 4 guidelines, weddings and civil partnerships are allowed in exceptional circumstances, such as if someone is seriously unwell.
Cllr Williamson, who got engaged last October, had 13 guests for the occasion.
She said she wanted to get married as soon as possible rather than delay her big day, adding: “I can’t control Covid but I still can get married. We were saying we wanted to get something back from 2020, so we got a puppy and we got married.
“Barbara Castle the whippet puppy was a very good bridesmaid.”
