Tour de parklets! Spaces are hailed by cyclists

13 March, 2020

CYCLISTS are set to tour the “parklets” in Islington and Hackney to raise awareness of the benefits of the car-sized community gardens.

Cycle Islington is inviting members of the public to join them on Saturday, March 21, when they will tour the various car parking spaces in Islington and Hackney that have been converted into mini parks.

The cycling group have called on Islington council to follow Hackney’s lead by encouraging communities to band together and convert parking spaces in their streets into gardens and flowerbeds.

Eilidh Murray, a spokeswoman for Cycle Islington, said: “Community parklets can encourage neighbours to meet, create, and watch plants grow together – sometimes they are the catalyst to many more local on-street activities such as book clubs, or coffee mornings, or just provide somewhere nice to sit for old and young alike.”

The group will meet outside St Luke’s Community Centre in Clerkenwell at 2pm.
