Town Hall announces plans for ‘Women and Girls Champion’
16 March, 2018
ISLINGTON is to appoint the country’s first Women and Girls Champion.
The new role, which will be filled by a councillor, will aim to highlight what more can be done to ensure the rights of women and girls are protected.
The councillor will champion services designed to support women and to end violence against them.
The Town Hall announced its plans on International Women’s Day, alongside Plan International UK, an organisation concentrating on children’s rights and equality for girls.
Community development chief Councillor Kaya Comer-Schwartz said: “In recent months we have seen powerful examples of how women have spoken out against sexual harassment and discrimination in society through the #MeToo movement.
“The fight for women’s equality is not over, and too many women in Islington and the world are facing harassment, discrimination and violence. We as a council have a responsibility to ensure everything we do that affects the lives of women and girls focuses on achieving equality.”
