Town Hall food vouchers for Xmas vulnerable

Council announces £850,000 support package to tackle ‘holiday hunger’

24 December, 2020 — By Calum Fraser

ISLINGTON Council has announced a £850,000 support package for the most vulnerable residents in the borough, including food vouchers over the Christmas holidays.

The Town Hall made the offer amid concerns that children will go hungry without the free school meals they eat during term time.

Cabinet councillor Una O’Halloran said: “To tackle holiday hunger, we are also providing supermarket vouchers through our family of schools to households with children eligible for free school meals.

“This will help relieve some of the pressure on struggling families over the festive period, and ensure all children can continue to get at least one healthy meal every day.”

In the New Year the council said it will also be providing food vouchers to families of children under five not yet attending school who receive council tax support or housing benefit.

The We Are Islington helpline is open for people struggling to get help during the coronavirus crisis and can be reached on 020 7527 8222 between 9am and 5pm.
