Tribune Christmas Hamper Appeal: Help us to deliver festive cheer

30 November, 2018

Area Cars’ Chris Christodoulides became Santa’s helper when we turned up with surprise gifts last year

SO here it is again: tomorrow (Saturday) you can finally open the first door on your fun-filled advent calendar and begin the countdown to Christmas Day.

Most people are making their way through lists of presents for their loved ones. That means for the next few weeks, London’s shopping streets are going to be filled with growing festive cheer. The tills will almost tap out the tune of Jingle Bells.

But this time of year can be painful and, sadly, a dreaded one for some of our neighbours in Islington.

Outside north London, people may see ours as an affluent borough, but we know from our reporting throughout the year that it is also a place where hardship exists alongside abundance.

We know that not everybody has the money to go out and splash the cash in an ever-growing ‘arms race’ of present-buying. This is why we organise our Christmas hamper appeal each year in an attempt to make sure nobody misses out on what should be the most special time of year.

With your help, we are looking to bring cheer to those Islington pensioners sat at home with next to no one to share celebrations, and only memories of Christmases past.

We also look to help families in dire need who are struggling to make ends meet, as well as those for whom 2018 was a testing year.

The appeal raises money for hampers and treats delivered across the borough in the week before Christmas. We know they won’t solve everything but we hope a small gesture can show that the community cares about those who need a helping hand.

All we ask is that readers donate whatever they can to our fundraising drive. It will enable us to deliver a treat to those who need it most, showing that they haven’t been forgotten.

The saying goes that giving is receiving and we hope that the knowledge that a donation, however small, helps someone will in turn amount to a one-of-a-kind Christmas present to yourself.

We are also looking for people who would like to organise a fundraising event, such as a sponsored run, cake sale or pub quiz.

And if you know anyone deserving of a hamper, please do get in touch.

You can send a cheque to ‘Islington Tribune Hamper Fund’, Islington Tribune, 40 Camden Road, London, NW1 9DR, or donate by clicking on the button below:
