A FORMER councillor has been remembered as a man who “fought hard for a better world for working people” after he passed away today.
Gary Doolan served as Labour councillor for St Peter’s ward for 12 years. He decided not to contest his seat in May’s local elections.
Mr Doolan, who worked for the GMB union, revealed earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2016.
The Town Hall announced this evening (Thursday) that he had sadly passed away.
Council leader Councillor Richard Watts said: “We’re extremely sad to hear of the death of Gary Doolan. Gary was a hard-working, well-liked and very effective councillor.”
He added: “Before his time as a councillor, Gary worked for Islington Council and helped represent staff through his involvement with the GMB trade union.
“Gary fought hard for a better world for working people, and will be remembered with affection by a great many people in our borough.”
St Peter’s ward councillor Martin Klute said: “Gary was a strong and resilient person, with socialist principles flowing in every inch of his body.
“He was a proud man, a fighter, and it is very cruel to see him finally struck down by such a horrible and lingering illness.
“It was his determined campaigning that first got me elected in 2006. I always had a strong sense of team spirit in all the work we did together.”
He added: “He was very much a guiding light for the traditional left wing of the party, a powerful balancing force in Islington Labour Party. He will be sorely missed.”
Cllr Claudia Webbe, executive member for transport and environment said: “I’m deeply saddened, my friend, mentor and comrade Gary Doolan has died.
“He was fearless defending the rights of workers, a GMB Union stalwart and true working class champion.
“An outstanding Cllr; unwavering in his challenge & battle for justice and equality. I’ll miss him so much RIP.”
Islington North MP and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said of his friend: “He was proud to be a GMB union rep and officer and represent his community as a Labour councillor.”
Lesley Seary, chief executive at Islington Council, said Mr Doolan “worked tirelessly to represent Islington residents”.
