The church door at St Mary’s
A BRAZEN thief has stolen a historic door handle turned by thousands of worshippers at St Mary’s Church.
The Reverend Simon Harvey arrived at the Upper Street church at 9.30am on Tuesday to find the brass handle at the main entrance had vanished overnight.
Mr Harvey said: “It’s a nice door handle that probably does have a bit of value.
“Thousands of people have turned that handle, from weddings to worship. It would be a shame to lose it. We’ve reported it to police and we’ve just got to pray that it might turn up somewhere.”

He appealed to anyone offered the handle to report it to police.
Much of the church, a Grade II-listed building founded in the 12th century, was rebuilt after World War II after being bombed during the Blitz.
A spokesman for Islington Police said: “At present there are no lines of inquiry.”
Witnesses who saw anything suspicious at the church should call police on 101 and quote reference 2712401/18
