Vibrant Cally Fest brings in the crowds

THE carnival came to Caledonian Road on Sunday as one of the biggest summer celebrations in Islington returned with a bang.

A parade featuring members from Barbican Drum Works and Roundhouse Circus, closely followed by a mariachi band, helped draw the crowds to the ninth Cally Festival.

From food, face-painting and fairground rides to dancing, hula-hoop demos and even dinosaurs – the fun at the fair was endless.

There was also plenty of live music and poetry, including readings from local schools. Jack Veal, 12, from City of London Academy Highgate was among those who took to the stage to read his “silly poem” about cleaning product Cillit Bang, before switching to serious to perform his poem “Stress”.

Supported and funded each year by local businesses and organisations from around the Caledonian area, the theme of festival this year was “Cally Pulling Together”, which it did in this vibrant and colourful showpiece.
