We can all agree that Islington has tremendous sporting and leisure facilities

08 September, 2017

• MAKING sure people in Islington have access to high quality and affordable sport and leisure activities has always been a priority for Islington Council.

That’s why despite massive ongoing government cuts to the council, we have worked hard to protect them.

There will be £15 million of investment in our leisure centres to increase sporting and leisure activity. This includes improvements at Cally Pool, Archway Leisure Centre, and Islington Tennis Centre, which have all resulted in increased usage. Works to expand Highbury Fields Leisure Centre are also nearing completion.

It is disappointing that the Secretary of State has chosen to call-in the plans developed over years with local residents for Barnard Park, which sought to strike a reasonable balance so that the park could be enjoyed by all.

Similarly, it is regrettable that Cllr Russell has chosen to talk down Islington and misrepresent the reality of sporting provision in the borough.

From the first class 11-a-side football pitches at Market Road, to the vastly improved tennis courts in Highbury Fields, I am very proud of the investment we have made in sport and leisure for the benefit of all our residents.

The new trampoline park at the Sobell Centre will double usage of the space, whilst footballers will be able to continue to play less than a mile away at Holloway School and at the Sobell.

Last year, three new 5-a-side pitches were introduced alongside two refurbished 11-a-side pitches at Market Road. Across the borough, new 3G pitches and floodlights have enabled more hours of football to be played. Also, working with Arsenal, more football pitches have become available on our estates and in our schools.

Whilst there are always going to be differing views about particular projects, I hope we can all agree that we should choose our words carefully and recognise the tremendous sporting and leisure facilities Islington enjoys.
