We can’t treat people from EU as bargaining chips
24 November, 2017
• ISLINGTON Labour is on the side of local people, and that includes people from other countries in the European Union.
That is why we have consistently called on the Tory government to immediately guarantee the full rights of people from countries in the EU living in Islington.
Now, we are turning up the pressure even higher. Islington Labour has launched a petition calling on the government to guarantee the full rights of people from countries in the EU now; stop using our friends, family and neighbours as bargaining chips in the Brexit negotiations; and guarantee that their rights will not be affected in the event of no Brexit deal.
I urge people to add their signature at www.islington-labour.org.uk/standing_up_for_islington.
Earlier this month, I spoke at the second advice session for residents originally from other countries in the EU. Once again, the session was fully booked and it felt like one of the most important events I had spoken at as a councillor.
Islington is home to around 30,000 people from countries in the EU, who make a huge contribution to our country. It is outrageous that the government continues to see them as a bargaining chip in their Brexit negotiations. We will not rest until the government listens to our demands.
