Whittington land deal row set for High Court

Campaigners have urged construction firm to abandon legal case

DEMONSTRATORS are due outside the High Court on Monday as a construction firm continues with its bid to sue the Whittington Hospital.

Campaigners have urged Ryhurst to abandon its legal case over a cancelled property deal but five days of court time have been set aside. The company says it unfairly lost work when the hospital pulled out of the deal to work on part of its estate.

This week, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn was the main speaker at a rally outside the Whittington and, as part of his general election pledges, promised more investment in the NHS so that hospitals would not feel pressured to broker deals with private companies.

Mr Corbyn is expected to be returned as an MP in his Islington North constituency at Thursday’s general election, while Emily Thornberry is the bookmakers’ favourite to win in Islington South.

But going into his second election as leader, Mr Corbyn’s campaigners in Islington will see how far his support extends beyond the borough next week.
