Women’s football in Britain has its roots in raising money for war veterans in World War I
• ON Sunday six million of us, the biggest audience ever, tuned in to watch the England team win their opening game in the Women’s FIFA World Cup.
But the history of women’s football in Britain has its roots in raising money – millions in today’s conversion – for war veterans in World War I.
After the success of the Dick Kerr Ladies in 1921 the Football Association banned women playing on any FA ground for 50 years.
Kick inequality and racism out of the beautiful game. If we succeed we all win.
